Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I want to get an Appraisal?

  Owners  wondering actual worth

  • Bankruptcy
  • Business Partnerships
  • Divorce
  • Estate Settlements
  • To help determine Fair Market Value for Buying / Selling
  • To include horse(s) in a Will or Living Trust
  • To Insure horse(s)  - Most Insurance companies require an Appraisal for horses valued over $5,000.
  • Collateral to obtain Loans
  • To Donate horse(s) - The IRS says “taxpayers are required to obtain a qualified appraisal for donated property for which a deduction of more than $5,000 is claimed” (IRS Publication 561)

Who should I hire to get my horse Appraised?

A good appraiser is in compliance with the National Standards of the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) and is aware & current with the local Market. “Recently, the Appraisal Qualifications Board (ABQ) in Washington D.C., adopted the Personal Property Appraiser Minimum Qualification Criteria. These national Criteria were established to assure that professional, personal propertyappraisers are fully qualified to do their work.”

Do I still need an Appraisal for my horse even though the Insurance Company isn’t requiring one?

Yes! Horse owners are not necessarily protected by an “Agreed Value” on their Equine’s Insurance Policy...Underwriters can still challenge the current market value of the horse by hiring an appraiser who doesn’t think your horse was really worth what it was insured for.

Do I need an Appraisal for my horse even though I am going to donate it?

Yes! If you would like to declare it as a “write-off”. The Internal Revenue Service requires a certified Equine Appraisal to support horse donations of greater than $5,000.

How much does an appraisal cost?

Rates vary depending on the location of the property and the type of Appraisal(s)  needed.

Is the Value of my horse affected by the Current Economy?

Yes, since markets are constantly changing, the value of horse(s) may vary considerably.

How long does it take to get an appraisal?

Typically it will take approximately 7-21 days after the completion of Inspection. (“RUSH” Appraisals are available for an additional fee.)
